People move jobs all the time for numerous reasons. It’s natural to want a change and develop yourself in something new. Maybe you’ve been in a job where progression is limited, or you simply don’t have a love for the job anymore. However, in some situations considering a complete career move can feel daunting, and there are a few things you should be asking yourself before considering a career switch.
1 – Am I in a position in my personal life to consider a move? – Some say ‘work is work’ but realistically anything you do in your professional life will have some kind of impact on your personal situation. Maybe you are looking for a complete career switch and need to consider location, a salary change and a brand new industry to introduce into your life. You need to weigh up the pros and cons. Are you in a position to consider a lower salary? Are you willing to start from scratch to work in your ‘dream job’? And finally, how is this going to affect you in your personal life?
2 – What do I want to get out of a career change? – You need to decipher what it is about your current role that you don’t want a new position to have. You also need to decipher what you like in your current role to ensure that those attributes aren’t lost in a new career move. More importantly, before moving from one role to another you need to see if there is the ability to fix the issues you are having rather than quitting and moving on to something new just for the sake of it.
3 – Who am I doing this for? This is probably one of the hardest things you will have to ask yourself. Although it is important to consider other external factors such as your partner, your parents, and your friends, you also need to be very honest with yourself as to why you are moving. Is it to keep someone else happy, or is it for your own happiness? As cliche as it may sound, you don’t want to move for the wrong reasons, and to keep others happy.
