Our Sales Manager for this team, Holly Bird, is sharing an insight in to the team as well as the part she plays in developing the future leaders of Barrington James:

Please can you explain what part the Associates team play at Barrington James?

“The Associates team are integral to deliver on a high volume of vacancies that Barrington James may not have had the capabilities to source for previously. Unlike the Consultants within our business, the Associates are trained to deliver across a multitude of business area’s making them experts at matching candidate’s true motivations and experiences to opportunities.

What made you want to take leadership of the Associates team?

I have always wanted to manage people because I enjoy learning about different personalities and what makes them tick. I also find it really rewarding to put time into someone and see them develop through the business so when the opportunity arose for me to work with a people with no previous sales experience, I thought it would be the perfect way to have a big impact on the future Consultants of Barrington James.

How do you train and develop them to ensure that they are performing at their best? 

The training at Barrington James is very structured within the first 3 months or so, however, after this I try to tailor the training to each individual person. Within the first week the Associates are given ‘the basics’ to set them up to start speaking to people and learning about the industry. We provide them with training on areas such as LinkedIn, our databases, styles of questioning and how to structure their calls. After 4 weeks on desk, they will have a 3 day crash course which will be off-site with our in-house training manager. Within these 3 days there is a lot of information to take in so from there-on we have at least one mini-training session per week to help keep the information fresh and put into practice.

Outside of this the associate’s team have access to our Performance Coach, Nick. Nick will work with each Associate on a one to one basis to help develop their calls whilst they are happening. By listening in to the calls as they happen, Nick can provide live feedback and help to steer the direction of the call to get the best out of it.

As each Associate develops within the team, they will start to run their own training sessions on areas in which they are confident in. This not only helps with the new members of the team but also with their own knowledge and capability.

What’s your advice to juniors who apply to join your team?

Do as much research as possible before coming to a face to face interview. Our second stage of the interview includes a task in which you will speak with candidates and so researching recruitment beforehand will help massively with these calls.

Have confidence in your answers and tell us the truth. There is no point in coming in to meet us and telling us what you think we want to hear, unless you actually believe it.
