Every recruitment consultant and every recruitment company has been affected during 2020, but here at Barrington James in Singapore and indeed across the globe we have been able to grow and excel through Covid-19. On face value, a lot of our competition has put this down to our sole focus being on Life Sciences and also down to luck, but trust me, there has been a lot of hard work and adaptation of our working practices to facilitate this growth. Year to date as a team, our revenue is up by almost 60% year to date and I am sure we all know that this can’t just be a determinant of being in Life Sciences as we have been providing this service for 18 years, 10 of those in Singapore.

Without giving too much away we wanted to share some of the secrets to our success;

We focus on real roles and genuine job seekers. This might sound obvious, but during Covid-19, we dramatically improved both our interview to placement and job to placement ratios by almost 50% by only working with genuine job seekers and ensuring that we don’t become desperate to work any role we can. Instead, we have worked even closer with our clients to ensure that we are prioritising the roles that they want filled.

On the candidate side, we have also been very upfront about the risks of moving roles at this time and ensure that we have had full discussions with candidates about the timing of their move and also about their true motivations and what truly excites them. Again, this sounds basic but throughout the last six months we have had no dropouts on offers, which in turn makes it a lot easier for consultants to hit their targets.

We continue to get in front of our clients and candidates. We all know client and candidate meetings are crucial in recruitment; so rather than allowing Covid-19 to reduce our client and candidate interaction, we have gone the other way – ensuring that prior to every interview, without fail, we are completing a full brief with candidates on Zoom or WhatsApp and making sure that our client and candidate interactions are as effective as they can be.

We have applied the same to our clients (both new and existing) ensuring that we are carrying out even more client meetings to take job specifications, catch up and discuss interview feedback. Moving to Zoom means we have been able to increase our meetings. As such, this has strengthened our relationships with our clients despite the challenges.

We continue to look for the best talent in the market. We have grown our headcount through Covid-19 by continuing to interview and network throughout this period. This month alone, we have three Senior Consultants and a new Country Manager for Japan joining the team. The easy thing would have been to sit tight and wait for the market to improve, before starting to hire again. However, we are extremely confident that as a business and with the strength of our existing team and these new hires, that we will be in a fantastic position to deliver only the best to our clients and candidates throughout the rest of this year and well into 2021.
