JOB DESCRIPTION

Medical Affairs Senior Director (TA Head) HIV/COVID-19, will provide overall therapeutic area leadership of the Medical Affairs organization for the company in Japan.

The Sr. Director of Medical Affairs will be accountable for building a world-class Medical Affairs team, establishing reputation of the company in the targeted disease area space and will lead development of the model and vision for the targeted therapeutic area in close align with Business Franchise while ensuring cross functional alignment to deliver against that vision.

Reporting to the Country Medical Director of Japan, the Sr. Director will also be a key member of the company in Japan Medical Affairs Leadership Team (J-MALT).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and lead the HIV/COVID-19 TA Medical Affairs to achieve/exceed quantitative and qualitative MA objectives in align with global & local strategies
  • Foster a productive work environment within the Medical Affair’s organization and champion effective alignment and engagement of the broader cross functional brand team based on shared objectives
  • Serve as a key internal scientific expert in the targeted therapeutic areas, and provide their healthcare landscapes for clinical trial, scientific publication, J-NDA review and brand strategies
  • Ensure effective cross-functional collaborations with internal and external stakeholders, including the Global/International Medical Affairs team, Marketing, Sales, Market Access, Clinical Research, Public Affairs, Government Affairs, Finance, Legal, and co-promotion partners
  • Establish effective working relationships with opinion leaders and other key external stakeholders and be recognized as an innovative and value partner in improving quality of care for patients
  • Lead and oversee the development and execution of Japan’s Medical Plan of Action (PoA) in close align with global and commercial leadership members
  • Oversees and implement as key scientific leader to excellently implement Key Opinion Leader engagement plan & action, scientific publication and product life-cycle management, with define goal, objectives and performance metrics
  • Maintain a high level of scientific presence in the medical community, including leadership at key opinion leader engagement, major international and national congresses, advisory boards, compliant communications with key opinion leaders, investigators, and research organizations in the Academic Society
  • Demonstrate successful planning & performance evaluation on the field medical activities in Medical Affairs by supporting Field Medical managers with constant monitoring of key performance and coaching.
  • Demonstrate key responsibility for successful planning and implementation of local evidence generation to close strategical clinical data gaps, work cross-functionally to obtain unmet needs from commercial and clinical and align with global / local study operation team
  • Demonstrate key responsibilities for promoting patient engagements and their related projects in align with Public Affairs and Patient community
  • Success experience for leading innovative scientific initiatives including digital transformation (DX) in partnership with academia / governments, registry with academia, etc. in the HIV / COVID-19 area.
  • Implement strong leadership to help forming new medical environments surrounding preventive medicine (PrEP) and emerging infections in collaboration with academic society
  • Ensure the Medical Affair’s compliance with the company operational processes and SOPs. Drive alignment of behavior within the Medical Affairs consistent with local laws, company values and Business Conduct policies
  • Attract and retain key talent for the company.
  • Develop key talent within the Medical Affairs; by creating an environment in which every member of the team has an opportunity to succeed
  • Be a member of the Japanese Medical Affairs Leadership Team, helping to shape the strategic direction, organization, processes, enterprise thinking and culture of Medical Affairs in the company.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • MD, PharmD, or PhD with experience in multiple areas including the infectious disease area is required
  • +7 years of relevant professional experience in Medical Affairs and/or Clinical Development, preferably in a similar role in either pharma or large biotech companies
  • Experience impactful medical affair’s leadership experience in Japan pharmaceutical industry
  • A strong and robust personal and professional network in the HIV space, adept at building new relationships rapidly with KOLs and other stakeholders
  • Deep and long-term experiences to excellently align with global organization and work closely with hem to achieve renowned achievements of Japan Medical Affairs
  • Strong leadership capabilities to lead peoples with excellent interpersonal skills to effectively manage team in the matrix environment
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain scientific knowledge and credibility to effectively communicate and discuss scientific information with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated excellence in project management and effectively managing multiple projects/priorities
  • Experience with communicating and negotiating with Senior Executive Management within and above country
  • Track record of successful budget management with an understanding of revenue forecasting and expense budget planning and tracking
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams or work groups as well as direct reports
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and integrity, represent the company’s high ethics, moral behavior, and professionalism
