Head of Business Development at X (a full-service CRO)
Location: Europe | Remote (Ideally base in the: UK, France, Germany)
Reports To: Chief Commercial Officer (CCO)
 
Prior experience leading a team, at a CRO is necessary for this position! This role will include the build out of a new business development team.
 
Job Summary:
As the Head of Business Development, you will oversee both strategic and operational functions within the business development department within our organisation. This position demands a dynamic leader with extensive CRO industry experience, capable of driving growth, establishing strategic partnerships, and strengthening client relationships. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, coupled with a proven track record in business development.
This role will include managing a set of strategic accounts, so sales and account management skills are just as necessary as having a strategic/governance skill set. As we are a new organisation formed through the merger of smaller entities, onboarding and combining the existing sales teams into one entity will also be paramount to secure the future of the business.
Interpersonal skills and fluency in multiple European languages are therefore attractive additions to an ideal candidate.
 
Key Responsibilities:

(Strategic Leadership)

  • Develop and implement the business development strategy aligned with the company’s goals and objectives.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities to expand the company's market presence.
  • Formulate long-term strategies to enhance competitive advantage and market share.
(Client Relationship Management)
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients and stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development of tailored proposals and presentations for potential clients.
  • Ensure client satisfaction and retention through exceptional service delivery and support.
(Team Leadership and Development)
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the business development team to achieve targets and objectives.
  • Foster a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to enhance team skills and capabilities.
(Market Analysis and Business Intelligence)
  • Conduct thorough market research to understand industry trends, competitive landscape, and client needs.
  • Analyse data to identify opportunities for business growth and innovation.
  • Prepare detailed reports and present findings to the executive team.
(Sales and Revenue Generation)
  • Develop and manage the sales pipeline from lead generation to deal closure.
  • Achieve or exceed sales and revenue targets.
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements with clients to secure new business.
(Brand Promotion and Networking)
  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and trade shows.
  • Enhance the company’s brand visibility and reputation in the market.
  • Develop marketing strategies and campaigns to attract new clients.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Life Sciences, or a related field; MBA or advanced degree is preferred. A scientific background or training would align with our culture well.
  • At least 10 years of experience in business development, with a minimum of 4 years in a leadership role within a life science CRO or related company.
  • In-depth knowledge of the CRO industry, clinical trials, and drug development processes.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement successful business development strategies.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Ability to travel as required to meet clients and attend industry events.
