Kathleen joined the Barrington James team just over a year ago working in our office in Raleigh. Internal progression is something that we are extremely proud of as a business and Kathleen had the opportunity to experience working in our Internal Recruitment team before moving over 6 months later to build her life science desk.

“Over the course of my time at Barrington James, I’ve had the pleasure of holding two different types of recruitment positions- both of which have been incredible learning experiences.

From starting out as an Internal Recruiter with no prior recruitment experience, to 6 months later making the decision to join my colleagues in 360 recruitment, I feel like I’ve gained so much knowledge from my first year with Barrington James.

As an Internal Recruiter, I learned what it meant to fully embrace the Barrington James culture. I, along with my fellow IR team member Brandon, was responsible for growing the Raleigh and New York City offices as quickly as possible.

This meant attending numerous career fairs along the East Coast, understanding everything about the company’s career path, and most importantly –  being able to identify and appeal to the most motivated and talented individuals.

Like most new recruiters, I struggled at first. For one, to understand what it is my “client” (Barrington James) was looking for, but also how to sell over the phone. However, through training and persistence, I finally saw success. I attended my first Director’s Lunch in June, and was even awarded an amazing complimentary trip to the London-Gatwick HQ in July with Brandon!

In late June, I decided to switch gears completely and join the Medical team as a Recruitment Consultant. Although I found some things to be similar such as candidate sourcing and posting job ads, I realized quickly just how different the job really is.

There is an incredible amount of skill involved between picking up a new job from a client via a cold call to making sure a candidate shows up to work for their first day. And there’s never any time to waste; if I hesitated to jump on a lead for any reason, I found myself later regretting that.

Like Internal Recruitment, there was definitely a lull where I wasn’t seeing success. But from day one I knew my task was simply to learn everything I could about my market, and to not give up.

And just like I described to all of my internal candidates when I was selling them on the dream at Barrington James,  I used my newly acquired market knowledge to connect some dots, and I completely smashed my target in my first targeted month.

Do I attribute that to already having 6 months experience? Partially. But I also know that the training I received from my managers and colleagues after my switch to 360 also proved to be incredibly helpful.

I’m so thankful to have had the experience of “selling the dream” to so many awesome individuals, and then being able to live out that dream myself.  I know my path is quite different from most consultants in the company, but it just goes to show that there is no ceiling on your success at Barrington James.”
