The jump from being a senior consultant to a fully-fledged sales manager is a huge achievement at Barrington James. Cara joined us in 2015 and is a key example of someone who has progressed up the ranks extremely quickly and is now growing her team. Currently managing two consultants as well as her own contract billing desk, she was also our Sales Person Of The Year in 2016.

What prompted you to get in to recruitment?

“It sounds cliché but I’ve always been driven to succeed. When I understood that recruitment rewards those that succeed with great money, recognition and career progression I wanted to prove to myself & others that I could succeed & climb the ranks quickly which is exactly how I became a Sales Manager within 18 months.

How have you progressed in Barrington James?

My career trajectory at Barrington James has been very fast, very intense but ultimately rewarding. I started in May 2015 with my sales background limited to selling two coffee machines at Christmas, so I had very little expectations or real understanding of what sales and recruitment could be.

As soon as I realised that all it took to make it big was hard work, professionalism and commitment, I stuck at it. Within 6 months I’d found my feet and began to run my own desk as my own business and create a name for myself in Contracts.

The following 12 months and my first real year in recruitment, I won Sales Person Of The Year and became a shareholder within the business by developing big clients and understanding the market. With my desk thriving, I took on more responsibility within the company and I swiftly rose from Consultant to Sales Manager all within 18 months of joining Barrington James – this is something I’m immensely proud of.

What initially attracted you to the management career path over being a ‘super biller’

Being a super biller is amazing, rewarding and you can earn ridiculous money. However being in management is challenging yet rewarding in a different sense, you get to work closely with those who have different goals in their career and help them achieve those. Management is a great development tool and appeals to me for three reasons; to help others earn money, for my own personal development & to get closer to the top.

What has your experience been like as a manager so far?

Every Sales Manager & Director will tell you that being a manager is the hardest job in recruitment – they are all right. Managing a sales team is undoubtedly the hardest role in the company. You have to continue to grow your own desk but also support those around you to grow theirs.

The most rewarding part is watching & supporting all consultants in the business to consistently ring the bell, earn money & enjoy it. You know you’ve done something right when your team starts to dress better & book incredible holidays.

What do you think makes a ‘great manager’?

A great manager is one who supports but also points you in the right direction. I’ve made many a mistake in recruitment but I’ve always had a great support network around me to push me in the right areas and encourage me to develop my desk.

Best part of your recruitment career so far?

Without a shadow of a doubt, it has to be winning Sales Person Of The Year in my first full year in recruitment –  It set me up for the best career trajectory at Barrington James and also taught me so much about recruitment in general. With winning SPOTY comes great recognition, 40 shares in the company and also £2,500 for a holiday which took me to a 5* hotel in Thailand this year!

What have your struggles been?

There’s been so many but I guess my most recent struggle has been deciding what new car to buy.

What’s the next step for you at BJ?

This time next year I aim to be the best billing manager in the company with 8-10 strong clients that all BJ consultants can benefit from, and a billing team of 3-4 all over 100% YTD. However, you can genuinely create your own path at Barrington James so who knows exactly what the future will bring.”
