When I first started university in 2016, I didn’t really understand what a ‘placement’ was or what benefits one could give me. Two and a half years down the line and I have successfully completed the first 2 months of my placement year, and I couldn’t be more thankful that I chose this path.
I fondly remember my exact mindset after my first few weeks at university. That mindset was to finish my course and get out into the ‘real world’ as soon as I possibly could. Looking back, I can’t believe how short minded I was. I assumed that the real working life experience came after my degree, and I felt that a placement year would somewhat prolong and disrupt my studies. I didn’t fully comprehend some of the opportunities that a placement year would provide me with, nor the endless benefits I could take from one.
Something I have quickly realised during my short time here at Barrington James, is that a university placement WILL provide you with an experience like no other. I have just completed the eighth week of my university placement, and I have already learned invaluable skills that I will now carry with me for the rest of my life. I can only imagine what else I will learn over the remainder of my journey here at Barrington James, and I know the best is yet to come.
One thing that I was unable to realise as a 2nd year student, was the advantages that a placement year would give me over all of my fellow course mates. The ability to prove to a future employer that you have successfully found and completed a placement relevant to your course, will immediately make you stand out from the crowd. It will prove your commitment to broadening your potential career opportunities, an attribute highly sought after by employers.
Not only will a placement give you professional experience, you will also see yourself develop on a more personal level. I have been given great responsibilities, a true opportunity to show my potential and make a sizeable impact in the success of Barrington James. I already feel more mature in myself, I don’t feel like a university student anymore. I feel like an employee of the 11th best small company to work for (voted by the Sunday Times) and this is a position I hold with great pride.
To summarise, a university placement is a fantastic opportunity to unlock so many doors for yourself. Not only will you increase your personal knowledge, but you will also learn important life lessons that you will only experience by getting out into the industry and seeing for yourself. A placement should never be considered a hindrance, as they are designed specifically to build your skill sets and personal experience.
