“This may be a stupid question, but why do people attend conferences?”
When I first entered the recruitment world, I was oblivious and ignorant to the main reasons to why we attend conferences. That being said, there isn’t a definitive answer to this question – it’s what you make of it.
Conferences bring people from varying geographical areas, who have a common interest and passion for a common discipline or field. You are automatically faced with hundreds if not thousands of like minded individuals, who have something in common with you. As you build your professional network, conferences become the hub where you connect with new as well as familiar faces that you have not been able to connect with over the year.
Learning is an experience, everything else is just information – Albert Einstein
You will hear about a lot of things within your field that will be new. Whether that’s new equipment, latest software, unpublished insights, and future predictions or even learn more from thought-leaders in this field + in addition to the new faces in your field. Every industry is rapidly and dynamically shifting, especially the life sciences space. Ai and Machine learning was a personal highlight for me from recent conferences, what do you predict will be the next big shift / advancement in the industry?
People get to meet YOU!
Regardless of if you’re a CEO of a multi-million pound company, or a 1st year grad student, you meet people at meals, at booths, exhibit halls or wherever. Making that connection in person with someone can dramatically influence your career positively! It’s a great opportunity to establish yourself in your field, after all – people buy character but train skill.
All the above are some of the reasons to why Barrington James invested over £500,000 across the globe, attending 40 conferences in 2018, and this number will be smashed by the end of 2019.
